Tor onion site

Tor onion site

Illustration by Kevin Zweerink for The New York TimesUpdated: February 12, 2022During the fall of 2021, The New York Times rebuilt it’s existing Onion service, added the “Onions Por Favor” service to the public New York Times website, and issued a new V3 Onion address. As with our previous Onion Service, visitors will not be able to create Times accounts or log in to their existing Times account via the V3 Onion service. The current address for our Onion Service is https://www.nytimesn7cgmftshazwhfgzm37qxb44r64ytbb2dj3x62d2lljsciiyd.onion/The Times would like to thank the TOR Project and Alec kraken Muffet for their support during this process.Original post from Oct. 27, 2017:Today we are announcing an experiment in secure communication, and launching an alternative way for people to access our site: we are making the nytimes.com website адрес available as a Tor Onion Service. The New York Times reports on stories all over the world, and our reporting is read by people around the world. Some readers choose to use Tor to access our journalism because they’re technically blocked from accessing our website; or because they worry about local network monitoring; or because they care about online privacy; or simply because that is the method that they prefer. The Times is dedicated to delivering quality, independent journalism, and our engineering team is committed to making sure that readers can access our journalism securely. This is why we are exploring ways to improve the experience of readers who use Tor to access our website. One way we can help is to set up nytimes.com as an Onion Service — making our website accessible via a special, secure and hard-to-block VPN-like “tunnel” through the Tor network. This onion address is accessible only through the Tor network, using special software such as the Tor Browser. Such tools assure our readers that our website can be reached without monitors or blocks, and they provide additional guarantees that readers are connected securely to our website.TechnologyOnion Services exist for other organizations — most notably Facebook and ProPublica, each of which have created custom tooling to support their implementations. Our Onion Service is built using the open-source Enterprise Onion Toolkit (EOTK), which automates much of the configuration and management effort. The New York Times’ Onion Service is both experimental and under development. This means that certain features, such as logins and comments, are disabled until the next phase of our implementation. We will be fine-tuning site performance, so there may be occasional outages while we make improvements to the service. Our goal is to match the features currently available on the main New York Times website.Over time, we plan to share the lessons that we have learned — and will learn — about scaling and running an Onion Service. We welcome constructive feedback and bug reports via email to [email protected], we would like to extend our thanks to Alec Muffett for his assistance in configuring the Enterprise Onion Toolkit for our site.Runa Sandvik was the Director of Information Security at The New York TimesThis post has been updated to reflect the current address for our Onion Service. The previous URL has been deleted.

Website addresses that end in “.onion” aren’t like normal domain names, and you can’t access them with a normal web browser. Addresses that end with “.onion” point to Tor hidden services on the “deep web”.Warning: Lots of .onion sites contain very nasty things, and many of them are likely scams. We recommend staying away from “browsing” .onion sites–instead, use this only if you have a specific site you want to access for a good reason. What Is a .onion Site?RELATED: How to Browse Anonymously With TorTor–short for “the onion router”–is an anonymizing computer network. It’s partially funded by the US government, and is designed to help people in countries where Internet access may be censored or monitored. When you connect to Tor, your internet activity is sent through the Tor network, anonymizing your Internet activity so it can’t be snooped on, and so that you can access websites that may be blocked in your country. So, when you access google.com through Tor, your request bounces from Tor relay to Tor relay before it reaches an “exit node”. That exit node then contacts Google.com for you, and it sends you back the data Google responded with. Google sees this as the exit node’s IP address contacting it instead of your IP address.RELATED: Is Tor Really Anonymous and Secure? But that means that “last mile” of traffic can be snooped on by an organization monitoring or even running the exit nodes–especially if your traffic is unencrypted. A “.onion” address points to a Tor hidden service, which is a server you can only access through Tor. This means that your browsing activity can’t be snooped on by someone watching the Tor exit nodes. It also means that someone hosting a website can hide that server using the Tor network, so no one can find it–in theory.Advertisement
For example, Facebook maintains an official Tor hidden services address at “https://facebookcorewwwi.onion/”. This allows you to access Facebook through Tor, and your connection doesn’t ever leave Tor where it can be snooped on. This may be useful in countries that block Facebook, for example. You don’t necessarily want to use Tor all the time, as it’s slower than just browsing normally. But it’s a useful tool for anonymizing your Internet activity and bypassing censorship. How to Access .onion Sites with the Tor BrowserTo access a .onion address, you’ll need to access it through the Tor Browser. It’s a modified version of Firefox that’s configured to connect to sites through the Tor network.Download the Tor Browser from the Tor project’s website to continue. It’s available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. On Android phones and tablets, we previously recommended the Orbot proxy app or Orfox browser from Google Play. The Tor project still offers no official Tor apps for iPhone or iPad, but some third-party apps are available in Apple’s App Store. After launching the Tor browser, type the .onion address into its address bar. For example, to access Facebook’s hidden service, you’d enter the following address:https://facebookcorewwwi.onion/Advertisement
Or, to access the DuckDuckGo search engine’s hidden service, you’d enter:http://3g2upl4pq6kufc4m.onion/While using the Tor browser, you can click links to .onion addresses and they’ll load normally. But they’ll only work in the Tor browser, while connected to Tor.Don’t Access .onion Sites Through Proxies Like Tor2WebYou can also access .onion sites without running Tor through proxies that connect to Tor for you. The proxy connects to Tor for you and then forwards you the traffic over the regular Internet. This, however, is a very bad idea! You’re losing the anonymity you normally have when you connect to a .onion site through the Tor browser. That’s the whole point of a .onion address, after all. The website you access maintains its anonymity, but someone monitoring your connection can see which website you’re connecting to. The service provider can also see what you’re connecting to and snoop on any passwords and other private information you provide over the connection.Tor2web functions in this way, but you shouldn’t use it. For example, if you attempt to connect to Facebook’s hidden service using Tor2web, Facebook blocks the connection and tells you it’s a bad idea.Looking for lists of .onion sites? Search the web for lists of .onion sites and you’ll find some places to start. Many of the directories of .onion sites are themselves stored on .onion sites, though, which you can only access through Tor.Advertisement
Again, beware: Lots of .onion sites contain very nasty things, and many of them are likely scams. We recommend staying away from them, if possible. This trick is best used when you want to browse to a specific .onion site.READ NEXT

Tor onion site

There is a lot of misconception around the dark web, and most of the people think that it is not possible to create their website on Dark web (The Onion network). Today we will set up a website in the Onion/Tor network for free (With our own home server). As you can see above, I have created my website in the Tor network, and I've accessed it using the Tor Browser. This tutorial consists of three stepsPreparing your computer (Not a real step)Installing & Configuring nginxInstalling TorConfiguring the Tor serverIngredientsAn old computer (You can try on AWS EC2, but I've not tried it there) 💻A stable internet connection 🌐2 hours ⌚Comfort using terminal ⌨InstructionsTo begin with, find a spare computer that can be used as a server (If you don't have one, you can try following the tutorial on an AWS EC2 or similar service). Also, you do not need a static IP for your dark web website. To follow the tutorial, You will need to install a Linux based OS on the server (we will refer your spare computer/cloud computer as a server from now), I have tested the below steps on Ubuntu 18.04 Server LTS and I recommend that you also use the same. Ubuntu 20.04 doesn't seem to work well with Tor.It is also recommended to use SSH to connect to your server since there will be no GUI, you will not be able to open this article on the server and copy-paste the commands. Typing the commands out will be time taking & also very error-prone.In this article, I will not explain how to use & configure SSH but you can refer the below link to understand & use SSH.How To Use SSH To Connect To A Remote Server In Linux Or WindowsImportant: Make sure you are running as root throughout the tutorial.sudo suLet's get our hands dark 😎Installing & Configuring nginxThe role of nginx is to serve the HTML files and assets (act as a web server).apt updateapt install nginxThe above commands will update the server & install nginx. To start the nginx serverservice nginx startTo check the status of the nginx serverservice nginx statusTo confirm if the nginx server is working. We will make a GET request to the server using curl. Before that, you'll need to know what is your IP address.ifconfigThe output will be similar to thislo: flags=73<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING> mtu 65536 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 scopeid 0x10<host> loop txqueuelen 1000 (Local Loopback) RX packets 134 bytes 21230 (21.2 KB) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 134 bytes 21230 (21.2 KB) TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0wlp9s0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet your-ip-address netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast ###.###.#.### inet6 ####::####:####:####:#### prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x20<link> ether ##:##:##:##:##:## txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet) RX packets 6379 bytes 8574482 (8.5 MB) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 3518 bytes 506008 (506.0 KB) TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0Find your IP address in inet your-IP-address. Note it down, using that now make a curl request.curl your-IP-address:80The console should print out the HTML code of the default nginx page. You can also check if nginx is working by typing the IP address of the server in your browser. To add your custom page, follow the steps from their official documentation. Beginner's guide - nginxInstalling TorInstalling Tor (not just the browser) allows your computer to communicate with the Tor network. Before installing Tor, we will have to install apt-transport-https, so that we can use source lines with https://apt install apt-transport-httpsImportant: The below commands are for Ubuntu 18.04 onlyIf you are running other OS, please find the commands here, from Tor's official, site. We will now open the sources file to add the Tor sources.touch /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/Once the editor is open, add the following sources to the filedeb https://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org bionic maindeb-src https://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org bionic mainAfter exit & saving, type the following in the terminal. This is to add the gpg key used to sign the Tor packages.curl https://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org/A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89.asc | gpg --importgpg --export A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89 | apt-key add -Finally, now we install Tor and also a package which will help to keep the signing key current.apt updateapt install tor deb.torproject.org-keyringSimilar to nginx, Tor can be started & checked by the following commandsservice nginx startservice nginx statusSetting up the tor serverNow that we have nginx & Tor up and running, we will have to configure Tor so that our server acts as a Tor server (Your server will not be used as a relay node)For this, we will have to edit the torrc file. The torrc is the configuration file for your Tor, the power of the file is such that, you can alter Tor to act as a proxy server & contribute to the Tor network (Not in this tutorial). In this tutorial, the torrc will be configured to act as a tor webserver (onion service).nano /etc/tor/torrcIn the torrc file, Go to the middle section and look for the line############### This section is just for location-hidden services ###And uncomment the following lines.HiddenServiceDir /var/lib/tor/hidden_service/HiddenServicePort 80 127.0.0.1:80In these lines,HiddenServiceDir will tell Tor where to save the private_key & hostname of your Tor website (They are information about your dark website). The private key stored is very important & could be used to impersonate you. In case you change your server, you just need to copy-paste your private key into the new server.HiddenServicePort lets you specify a virtual port (that is, what port people accessing the website will think they're using) and an IP address and port for redirecting connections to this virtual port.To apply this new configuration, Stop the Tor service and start it again by typing the following commands.service tor stopservice tor startNow check the status of the tor service to see if the changes are working & valid.service tor statusIf things are looking good, proceed to the next step, otherwise, you might have made a mistake in editing the .torrc file.At this point, your dark website must be running. But we don't know what is the URL, to get it, run the following commandcat /var/lib/tor/hidden_service/hostnameThe URL to your all-new dark website will be printed in the console. To test if it's workingcurl -v --socks5-hostname localhost:9050 http://your-onion-domain.onionThe URL is actually your-public-RSA-key.onion. Tor has a different way of identifying websites, i.e. via their public RSA key.You might notice that the URL generated, is very long and you might be wondering how to create custom hostname (i.e. Custom RSA public key). I will be creating an article on this topic very soon. Now let's celebrate on your first dark website 🎉. Also please share your thoughts in the comments 😁 (For example, you can ask me to add instructions on "how to add your custom page in nginx")
